Boarded up house in Detroit

From Tragedy to Triumph

Since April 5th, 2005, Juanita has lived in the Clark Apartments with her son Johnathan. A loyal tenant for 18 years, Juanita found a haven at a time when things in her life were anything but.

After losing three of her children in a fire on December 1st, 2000, Juanita was forced into places that were not fit to raise a family. Certainly not fit for raising her surviving son, who suffers from a blood disorder.

Before finding MiHousing, formerly Southwest Housing Solutions, Juanita and her sister were raising their children together in unsafe living conditions because it was the best they could afford.

That is when they found MiHousing, and their lives changed. Both Juanita and her sister moved their families into the Clark Apartments in 2005.

“It was the first place after that loss that really came through for me.”

No matter what life threw her way, Juanita felt prepared to handle it because she had a home that she knew she could always come back to.

“I never had to feel like I wasn’t going to have a home.”

For the last 5 years, Juanita has also taken advantage of the behavioral and physical health services offered by MiHealth, formerly Southwest Counseling Solutions. She now has an affordable and integrated system of care in which she can speak with a therapist and get her prescriptions.

It is because of your support that families like Juanita’s have a place to call home. YOU make this possible.

“It was a beautiful place to stay. They got me out of a situation that I don’t think I would have survived without them.”
